Full Pour Review: The Guncle

OMG MY HEART 😭 What an INCREDIBLE, feel-good book filled with amazing characters! 🥰 The Guncle by Steven Rowley absolutely lived up to ALL of the Bookstagram hype and immediately found a place in my top 10 favorite books of 2021.

BOOK DESCRIPTION: “Patrick, or Gay Uncle Patrick (GUP, for short), has always loved his niece, Maisie, and nephew, Grant. That is, he loves spending time with them when they come out to Palm Springs for weeklong visits, or when he heads home to Connecticut for the holidays. But in terms of caretaking and relating to two children, no matter how adorable, Patrick is, honestly, overwhelmed.

So when tragedy strikes and Maisie and Grant lose their mother and Patrick’s brother has a health crisis of his own, Patrick finds himself suddenly taking on the role of primary guardian. Despite having a set of “Guncle Rules” ready to go, Patrick has no idea what to expect, having spent years barely holding on after the loss of his great love, a somewhat-stalled acting career, and a lifestyle not-so-suited to a six- and a nine-year-old. Quickly realizing that parenting–even if temporary–isn’t solved with treats and jokes, Patrick’s eyes are opened to a new sense of responsibility, and the realization that, sometimes, even being larger than life means you’re unfailingly human.

Besides the fact that this book had me laughing from the very beginning, my favorite part was the lovable and relatable characters. I absolutely adored GUP and getting to see him grow as an individual throughout this book while caring for Maisie and Grant (and while mourning his own losses). GUP was an incredible support system to Maisie and Grant, and the love they had for one another felt so genuine and heartwarming.

In addition to my love for the characters, I thoroughly enjoyed the witty banter and light hearted comedy throughout this book. I also adored the life lessons touched on in this book that called the reader to self reflect. I think the best compliment that I could possibly give about this book is simply acknowledging how much I did not want it to end.

I truly can’t recommend this one enough. If this book isn’t already on your radar, I highly recommend checking it out. The Guncle will leave you in the best possible mood and is sure to make you smile, laugh, and cry.

BEER RECOMMENDATION: The Guncle by Steven Rowley is best paired with NOBO with Pineapple by Monument City Brewing 🍻
